September signals not just the beginning of autumn in its full glory, but also the time for Pinks Boutique, an organic beauty brand, to host Organic Beauty Festival in partnership with Spas and salons around the UK, raising awareness of what truly organic health and beauty products and brands stand for. I am sure you keep on hearing about the issue of ‘green washing’ that has been gaining momentum and dividing opinions in the last year.
While many brands put words ‘natural’, ‘biological’ and ‘organic’ on their packaging, unfortunately it doesn’t mean that the product in question doesn’t contain harmful substances, so the consumer needs to be more aware of this, in order to make a truly educated choice. Organic products, be it for beauty or well-being, are free from synthetically manufactured chemicals such as SLS, SLES, petrochemicals and synthetic emollients, like liquid paraffin or mineral oils. While I am not going to preach on the subject, as I use products from both sides of the spectrum, I certainly favour organic brands more and more. I tend to choose the ones that are certified by Soil Association, UK’s leading organic certification body (its stamp of approval means that the product that you are buying contains pure, natural, at times even raw, organic ingredients which don’t contain any pesticides, thus you can be sure that whatever you use on your skin isn’t going to put toxins into your blood stream) or its European counterpart Ecocert.
Kirstie Sherriff, co-founder of Pinks Boutique says that ‘demand for organic beauty products is on the increase, but there can be a world of difference between a beauty product that has been certified and one that is merely described as ‘organic’ on the label.
So far I have only tried two of Pinks Boutique products, but both of them are the brand’s best-sellers, namely Hand Balm and Rose Crystal Bath Soak, both of which are particularly needed at this time of the year, when the heating goes up and the temperatures outside start to drop.
Rose Crystal Bath Soak (100% natural, 200g, £25): it is 100% natural with mineral crystals, infused with 0.75% organic oils that will relax you body and put your mind at ease. It combines Himalayan mineral crystals and Dead Sea Salts, as well as Epsom salts that are known for their detoxing properties. The salts are infused with essential oils of rose and lavender, allowing you to let go of all the worries of the day and rebalance your body’s mineral composition as well. When you open the glass jar, you see pink salt crystals and dry rose bulbs and inhale the subtle aroma. Add two or three teaspoons to running bath water, let it dissolve a little and then immerse yourself into the bath for a 15-20 minute soak, book and candles are optional.
Ingredients: Sodium chloride (Himalayan mineral crystal), maris sal (Dead Sea salt), magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt), pelargonium graveolens flower oil*, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) flower oil*, cymbopogon martinii flower oil*, cananga odorata flower oil*, rosa centifloia (rose) flower oil*, geraniol**, citronellol**, limonene**, linalool**, farnesol**, citral**, benzyl benzoate**, benzyl salicylate** (**Natural constituents of essential oils.) (*Certified organic. **Natural constituents of essential oils.)
Hand Balm (87% organic, 100% natural, 50g, £20): this balm was developed to hydrate your hands, as well as promote cell regeneration. Our hands are one of the first body parts to show our age, so it is a good idea to show them tender loving care, especially as they do so much for us on a daily basis. It contains neroli oil, shea butter and vitamin E, which will benefit your hands greatly, especially if they tend to be dry or if you get cracked skin as well.
You only need a tiny bit of this wonderfully rich balm (ideally apply it to your hands before bedtime and let it work its magic overnight) and it adds a wonderful sheen to your hands almost immediately, combined with a heady neroli, ylang ylang and sweet orange aroma.
Ingredients: Shea butter (butyrospermum parki) – organic sunflower oil (helianthus annus) – organic apricot kernel (prunus armeniaca) – vegetable wax (cetyl alcohol) – organic jojoba oil (buxus chinensis) – vegetable glycerine – natural vitamen E (tocopherol) – essential oils of sweet orange ( citrus sinensis) – patchouli (pogostemon cablin) – ylang ylang (cananga odorata) – neroli ( citrus aurantium) – corn starch (zea mays). NATURALLY OCCURING; linalool – limonene – benzyl benzoate – benzyl salicylate – eugenol – farneso.
